The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band. The group has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide throughout their career. The band has been active in five decades, with their biggest success occurring in the 1970s. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.
Drummer John Hartman arrived in California in 1969 determined to meet Skip Spence of Moby Grape and join an aborted Grape reunion. Spence introduced Hartman to singer, guitarist, and songwriter Tom Johnston and the two proceeded to form the nucleus of what would become The Doobie Brothers. Johnston and Hartman called their fledgling group "Pud" and experimented with lineups (occasionally including Spence) and styles as they performed in and around San Jose. They were mostly a power trio (along with bassist Greg Murphy) but briefly worked with a horn section.
In 1970, they teamed up with singer, guitarist, and songwriter Patrick Simmons and bass guitarist Dave Shogren. Simmons had belonged to several area groups (among them "Scratch", an acoustic trio with future Doobies bassist Tiran Porter) and also performed as a solo artist. He was already an accomplished fingerstyle player whose approach to the instrument complemented Johnston's rhythmic R&B strumming.
"Long Train Runnin'" (or "Long Train Running") is a song recorded by The Doobie Brothers and written by band member Tom Johnston. It was included on the band's 1973 album The Captain and Me and released as a single, becoming a top 10 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 8.
It was covered by Italian band Traks in 1982 and was then by English girl group Bananarama in 1991. In 1993, the Doobie Brothers version was remixed and charted again in several countries.
The song is sometimes titled "Long Train Runnin' (Without Love)" due to the words "without love" being sung frequently during the song.
The harmonica bridge is played by lead vocalist Tom Johnston.
The tune evolved from an untitled and mostly ad-libbed jam that the Doobies developed onstage years before it was finally recorded. Its working title, according to Johnston, was "Rosie Pig Moseley" and later "Osborn". "I didn't want to cut it," Johnston later confessed. "...I just considered it a bar song without a lot of merit. Teddy [Templeman], on the other hand, thought it had some." Templeman convinced Johnston to write words to the song.
"Listen to the Music" is a song recorded by The Doobie Brothers on their second album Toulouse Street. This song was The Doobie Brothers' first big hit in 1972, it remains a concert staple and is one of The Doobie Brothers' biggest hits. This song is usually played as the last song at The Doobie Brothers' concerts.
Writer Tom Johnston described the motivation for the song as a call for world peace:
The studio recording used both a banjo and a prominent flanging effect, audible from the bridge until the fadeout and when released as a single by Warner Bros. Records, the song peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1972. Its commercial success helped the album Toulouse Street skyrocket on the charts. The song remains a staple of adult contemporary and classic rock radio. The band also uses it as an encore song during live shows. It was written and sung by guitarist and vocalist Tom Johnston. Patrick Simmons, the second guitarist and vocalist in the group, sings the bridge of the song.
The Music were an English alternative rock band, formed in Kippax, Leeds in 1999. Comprising Robert Harvey (vocals, guitar), Adam Nutter (lead guitar), Stuart Coleman (bass) and Phil Jordan (drums), the band came to prominence with the release of their debut album, The Music, in 2002. The band released two further studio albums, Welcome to the North (2004) and Strength in Numbers (2008), before parting ways in 2011.
The Music all met at Brigshaw High School, except Phil Jordan who went to Garforth, and began playing in 1999 as Insense. In 2001 the song "Take the Long Road and Walk It" circulated as a demo before being released by Fierce Panda as a 1000-copies-only single, a rarity from its day of release. Around this time the NME and Steve Lamacq were describing them as the best unsigned band in Britain. The band were quickly signed by Hut, who released their first EP You Might as Well Try to Fuck Me.
In 2002, following another EP (The People) they released their eponymous début album which reached No. 4 in the UK album charts. Their début single was re-issued as part of a two-disc set to promote the album, and reached No. 14 in the singles chart. Two further singles from the album, "Getaway" and "The Truth is No Words" reached No. 26 and No. 18 respectively. June 2003 saw them filling in for an absent Zwan on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival.
The Doobie Brothers got their start in the very late '60s, playing their upbeat, melodic, guitar-driven, multipart-harmony rock in the biker bars and hippie joints in Northern and Central California. Signed to Warner Bros. in 1971, the Doobies released the first in an unbroken string of ten Platinum and/or Gold albums through 1981. The band went through several personnel changes, the most notable being cofounder Tom Johnston's exit in 1976 and pop/R&B; singer/songwriter Michael McDonald joining to lead them through a more sophisticated and even more successful musical phase. The Doobies split up in 1982 but reunited in '88 with many original members, cut another Gold-certified album, and have been rockin' down the highway worldwide ever since. Long Train Runnin' 1970-2000 is the first and o...

It was an emotional night and would be the last gig for 5 years. The set contained all their best loved hits and they were joined by founder member Tom Johnston for the last two tracks, with former members John Hartman (also from the original line-up), Tiran Porter and Michael Hossack coming on stage for the celebratory finale of "Listen To The Music". The band are in fantastic form and rise to the occasion magnificently, they can rarely have delivered a better performance throughout their distinguished career. An album called "Farewell Tour" was released by Warners in 1983 but this featured tracks ...

See them both feet run and you watch them dissapear
Without love where would you be now
Without love
